3 Ways to Cope with your New Normal

Mama Needs Blog

✨ SELF-CARE TIP TUESDAY ✨

Today, my friend Megan reminded me that when we’re going through an event like this that can be traumatic for many people, it’s helpful to use some coping mechanisms to help us deal with this new normal we all have (that is temporary!). I’m not a professional by any means, but these 3 ways to cope have helped me and I hope they help you, too.

First, name the narrative and tell the story of what is happening – the facts. Next, recognize how you’re feeling. Last, practice gratitude.

I’ll go first:

  • Two weeks ago I had to cancel flying to a retreat with friends that I very much needed and was looking forward to because of the risk of coronavirus.
  • Then, our Governor announced schools would be closed until March 30.
  • I am now a work-at-home Mama and a homeschooling Mama.
  • We decided to cancel our upcoming spring break trip to Texas to see family and friends that we haven’t seen in over a year.
  • Our Governor announced closings of restaurants, bars and other businesses, which hugely impacts our very small community.
  • People from other states (4 in fact) have traveled to our area to stay in their mountain homes and flee the virus only to have tested positive and possibly infect others.
  • We found out yesterday that our K-12 NC schools are now closed until May 15
How I’ve been feeling:
  • I feel stressed and anxious, sad, frustrated and angry. Honestly it’s felt like a grieving process.
What I’m thankful for:
  • I’m thankful that I get to be home with my kids, that we get to have more time together, that time has slowed way down, that we are relatively healthy right now.
I may need to repeat this multiple times and that’s OK.

Now it’s your turn. Grab your journal or call a friend. First, tell your narrative. Give the facts. Then feel your feelings. Last, list what you’re thankful for in this season.
