A Mother’s Day Story

Mama Needs Blog

✨ SELF-CARE TIP TUESDAY ✨

Motherhood was something I knew would probably be part of my life but I didn’t always want to be a Mom. I honestly didn’t think I was cut out for the job.

I remember one time at a friend’s bachelorette party, everyone was asking her when she and her husband-to-be would have kids. She said she was hoping to conceive on her wedding night!

I had already been married about 2 years and I’m sure my eyes got wide in disbelief. That was not what I had in mind. Inevitably, their attention turned to me and one of the women asked me the same question, since I’d already been married for a bit. And I said casually, “Oh, I’m not ready.”

One of them scoffed out loud and said, “You’ll never be ready!” At this point, I was mortified and longing for the conversation to quickly shift away from me and move on to something else other than babies!

But I never forgot those words: “you’ll never be ready.” She was right! I wanted to be a Mom someday; I just had to try. But I had a lot of fear and anxiety to move past first.

Two years later when I accidentally forgot to refill my birth control and then decided I didn’t want to refill it, that’s when I “knew”. I had done a lot of internal work to get to that point. I was ready in a lot of ways, but that woman was still right, you’re still never quite ready for what is to come.

I never in a million years thought I would have 3 children but man, I am so proud to be their Mama. Motherhood has been a great teacher. It’s brought out strength and courage I never knew existed. It’s also brought out ugly truths and reminded me that I am a work in progress. I wouldn’t change a thing.

Whatever your story is, let’s take some time this Sunday on Mother’s Day to bask in the glory of being a Mama. Whether you had kids biologically or through adoption, what a gift we’ve been given.

However old your kids are, you made it this far; well done! Now take the day off, tell everyone they’re not allowed to fight, enjoy your (hopefully fully cooked and not burned) breakfast in bed, cold coffee, handmade gifts and tons of chaos. You matter, Mama.
