Adjust your expectations

✨ SELF-CARE TIP TUESDAY ✨

What do you do when a pandemic hits the world? I choose a word for each year and my word for 2020 is “Go”. Which of course is pretty ironic considering I’ve been forced to “Stay (at home)”.

I’m choosing to believe that happy times are on the way and that change is coming – in a good way. I’ve had to adjust my standards and expectations and so many people have pivoted their businesses and lives. Our kids have had to completely switch up their days and it’s been a huge adjustment for us all.

So how can we regroup and move on from here? Here are just a few ways I am doing this:

1. Be kind to yourself AND to others. Maybe you aren’t where you want to be physically (I’m raising my hand), or you didn’t reach a goal at work that you were striving for or you are completely worn out from being a working mom and now homeschooling mom. You can only do what you can do; extend kindness to yourself and others by lowering expectations in this season.

2. Give yourself some “wins”. What are some easy things you can accomplish and mark off your list? Maybe being at home has given you more time to clean out your closets, garden outside or have a virtual yard sale. Do some small things that will both help you feel accomplished and feel productive!

3. Choose connection over isolation. We are all isolated in some way but we can still connect with others! For Mother’s Day we did zoom calls with my whole family and my husband’s whole family – something we probably wouldn’t have done on a “normal” Mother’s Day. Meet a friend at a drive-thru for coffee (social distanced, of course) and catch up! Find ways that work for you to reconnect with friends and family.

4. Take time for reflection. What can we learn from all of this? How can we apply some of this new slowness to our reality when it’s over? Journal your thoughts and feelings about this time that you and your kids can look back on later.
